Nestled deep in the Manoa Valley on the island of Oahu, the Harold L. Lyon Arboretum is a leader in the fields of Hawaiian ethnobotany, conservation biology, and horticulture. On its 194 acres, the Lyon Arboretum works to preserve and restore Hawaii's tropical forests and ensure the survival of endangered native plants, a vital part of the Hawaiian heritage.

Visitors are welcome to explore the Arboretum's rainforest, theme gardens, waterfalls, and a world-renowned collection of more than 5,000 tropical plant species, including heliconias, gingers, aroids, bromeliads, native Hawaiian plants, and one of the largest palm collections found in a botanical garden. The lower grounds near the Visitors Center feature the herb and spice garden, the Native Hawaiian Garden, and the Beatrice Krauss Hawaiian Ethnobotanic Garden. Nestled in a garden of native Hawaiian plants, a 'Hale' (a traditional Hawaiian house) has been painstakingly constructed in the ancient Polynesian way, using native materials and tools. More adventurous hikers may explore the upper grounds in the Economic Section, the palm collection, and another native Hawaiian garden or hike the beautiful trail to Aihulama Waterfall.

You may either use the guide or a smartphone to scan the many stops in the garden for narrations of Hawaiian legends and cultural facts about the native plants.
